Overview
- A male Baird (Central American) tapir has arrived at Tierpark Hellabrunn and is in an acclimation phase with visitors likely able to see it from Friday if the animal settles well.
- The Nashornhaus was remodeled inside and out to house a tapir pair and to reorient that section of the zoo toward the Geozone America.
- Hellabrunn plans to bring a female from the Americas to form a breeding pair and to contribute any offspring to the European Endangered Species Programme that EAZA is developing.
- The Baird tapir is classified as severely endangered by the IUCN with an estimated fewer than 5,500 animals in the wild and the species is rare in European collections, with Zoo Cottbus the only other German holder.
- If breeding succeeds, the transfer could help genetic management and long-term survival in European zoos and boost public awareness, though the tapir will sometimes be out of sight during acclimation when it uses retreat areas.
