Overview
- The project spans 51.38 km of broad-gauge track featuring 48 tunnels totalling 12,853 metres and 55 major bridges engineered to navigate Mizoram’s rugged terrain.
- Commissioner of Railway Safety Sumeet Singhal authorised the final 33.86-km Hortoki–Sairang section after inspecting it by motor trolley, on foot and via a diesel-powered speed trial between June 6 and June 10.
- The commissioning makes Mizoram the fourth northeastern state capital after Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh to gain direct rail connectivity with India’s national network.
- Bridge No. 196 towers at 104 metres—42 metres taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar—highlighting the scale of engineering achievements in the project.
- The Northeast Frontier Railway has indicated that train operations will commence once the Centre issues its final approval following the formal inauguration.
