Overview
- During a ticket check on a regional service from Offenburg to Karlsruhe on Friday evening, a verbal dispute with a 36-year-old passenger escalated into a physical fight and a 26-year-old DB security employee fell from the moving train.
- The security employee was found injured beside the tracks about two kilometres past the later stop and remains in critical, life‑threatening condition in hospital.
- Police detained the 36-year-old on the train immediately after the incident but an application for pretrial detention was later refused by the local Amtsgericht and he was released; prosecutors say charges such as dangerous bodily harm or attempted homicide are being considered.
- The train has been seized and a technical expert has been commissioned to determine why a door or door assembly opened or came loose while the train was traveling at about 120 km/h, and investigators are checking witness statements and possible video footage.
- Deutsche Bahn and unions called the attack unacceptable and demanded stronger measures including more security, bodycams and legal changes as the case revives broader concern over a rise in assaults on rail staff in 2025.
