BAE's TRV-150 Drone Uses Guided Rockets to Shoot Down Multiple Attack Drones

Company trials show that fitting low-cost APKWS laser kits to a heavy-lift cargo UAS could give forces and ships a cheaper way to defeat swarmable attack drones.

Overview

  • The TRV-150, a SURVICE-adapted variant of Malloy’s T-150, conducted live-fire trials at Eglin Air Force Base during Sept. 21–25 that reportedly engaged several one-way attack drones in a single sortie without landing to reload.
  • The aircraft carried a production-ready three-pod launcher that fired multiple APKWS rockets, which convert a standard 70 mm Hydra rocket into a laser-guided precision munition.
  • BAE’s FalconWorks led the APKWS integration with SURVICE and Malloy while the tests built on a July 2025 single-shot firing that first proved the concept on an adapted T-150.
  • BAE says it now plans to adapt the rocket-armed TRV-150 for shipboard defense, but the company has not announced any formal fielding decision or in-service date and the work remains at the prototype and experimentation stage.
  • The trials point to a wider move toward cheaper precision weapons for countering drone swarms and could change how sailors and deployed units defend ships and convoys by offering a lower-cost alternative to air-to-air missiles.
