Baerbock Sworn In as UN General Assembly President, Opens 80th Session

She pledged to use the procedural post to push UN reform, with a transparent Secretary‑General selection process a priority.

Overview

  • Annalena Baerbock took the oath in New York, placed her hand above the original UN Charter, received the gavel from predecessor Philemon Yang and opened the first meeting of the 80th session.
  • She said the UN is under political and financial strain and vowed to keep the 193 member states engaged while advancing efficiency, SDGs, climate action and gender equality.
  • Baerbock plans to ensure open involvement of the General Assembly in the search to succeed António Guterres, whose term runs through 2026.
  • Her early test comes later this month with the General Debate, including a push by several countries to recognize a Palestinian state on September 22 and a speech by U.S. President Donald Trump on September 23.
  • Baerbock was elected in June by an overwhelming majority after a secret ballot requested by a member state reported to be Russia; she is the fifth woman to hold the one‑year post.
