BAE Systems Cybersecurity Incident Shuts U.S. Bankruptcy Noticing Center

Investigators are working to determine the cause and whether any data were accessed.

Overview

  • The contractor-run Bankruptcy Noticing Center stopped producing and sending paper and electronic bankruptcy notices on Oct. 9, and multiple courts posted service-interruption alerts on Oct. 13 before the judiciary publicly labeled the problem a cybersecurity incident on Oct. 15.
  • The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts says all access to BNC systems and related websites is unavailable, including bnc.uscourts.gov, bankruptcynotices.uscourts.gov, notices.uscourts.gov, and the National Creditor Registration Service.
  • The outage prevents generation of the creditor mailing lists many courts use to serve documents, which could leave some creditors or parties unaware of deadlines or filings.
  • BAE Systems and the judiciary say BAE is investigating and coordinating with courts but have not disclosed the incident’s cause, whether data were accessed or exfiltrated, or when full services will be restored.
  • The episode highlights the risk of relying on a private contractor for a core court function and follows a 2025 breach of federal court filing systems, leaving courts to accept filings with limited manual workarounds while the investigation continues.
