Overview
- Since mid-April, a scan vehicle has been monitoring six parking zones at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart as part of a three-month pilot project.
- The technology, authorized by a March 2025 state law, uses roof-mounted cameras to scan license plates and cross-check them with a database of digital parking permissions.
- Scan vehicles can inspect up to 1,000 parked cars per hour, significantly outpacing the 50 cars typically checked by foot patrols, while also reducing confrontations with drivers.
- Data privacy measures ensure that compliant vehicle data is deleted immediately, offender data is retained only until the fine process concludes, and pedestrians are automatically blurred in captured images.
- Following the Stuttgart trial, further tests are planned in Heidelberg and Freiburg, with other cities like Mannheim, Freiburg, and Heilbronn expressing interest in adopting the system.
