Backpack and Rifle Found as Search Narrows to Hayes River for Missing Norwegian Trekker

Police say items recovered near the Hayes River suggest the 29-year-old may have been swept away during a crossing.

Overview

  • GPS data last transmitted on Aug. 14 placed Steffen Skjottelvik on the east shore of the Hayes River about 4.5 kilometres from York Factory.
  • RCMP say searches are concentrated on waterways to the north and northwest of the last coordinates, using boats, aircraft and drones.
  • The family says RCMP confirmed recovery of his backpack and rifle near the river, with the gear believed to have been in the water for some time.
  • Authorities believe he may have tried to cross the fast-moving river and been carried downstream, and they note the effort is shifting toward search-and-recovery after a week without contact.
  • One of his dogs reached York Factory as volunteers and donors in Canada and Norway fund renewed helicopter and boat operations after early costs were reported around $70,000.
