Back-to-Back Police Interventions at Essen Central Station: Gas-Burner Threat and Fan Held

Outcomes differed, with a station ban in one case versus custody in the other.

Overview

  • On Sunday at about 09:45, officers responding to a call at platforms 6/7 confronted a 40-year-old from Olpe who shouted he had a weapon while holding a handheld gas burner.
  • Police brought the man to the ground, seized the burner, handcuffed him and issued a station ban; an investigation for disturbing the public peace by threatening crimes is ongoing.
  • On Saturday around 18:00, a 50-year-old 1. FC Union Berlin supporter at the station ignored a dispersal order, insulted officers and resisted as they enforced the ban.
  • After a duty judge initially declined continued detention, the man left the station with police, turned back outside and assaulted the officers before being restrained again.
  • Following the renewed attack, the judge ordered custody and proceedings began for insult, bodily harm, resistance and assault on enforcement officers; police said he also soiled two cells while held.
