Baba Adhav, Stalwart of Maharashtra’s Labour Movement, Dies in Pune at 95

Public tributes focus on a legacy built around the rights of unorganised workers, with a deep commitment to caste equality.

Overview

  • Adhav died at 8:25 pm on Monday after a 12-day ICU stay in Pune, where he was on life support following a sudden deterioration in health, his aide said.
  • His longtime physician reported multiple myeloma over five years with a lung infection, kidney failure and recurrent pneumonia contributing to his final illness.
  • His body will lie in repose at Hamal Bhavan in Market Yard on Tuesday from 10 am to 5 pm, followed by cremation at the Vaikunth electric crematorium without religious rituals at about 5:30 pm.
  • Condolences came from across parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar, who praised his work for marginalised workers.
  • The Hamal Panchayat founder also led the 'Ek Gaon, Ek Panwatha' campaign and helped organise autorickshaw drivers and waste pickers, with several accounts crediting his movement with shaping the 1969 Mathadi and Hamal workers law.
