Overview
- The disruption began around 16:00 UTC and hit Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, Xbox, Minecraft, Copilot and other Azure‑backed services, with customers also struggling to access the Azure portal.
- Microsoft said an inadvertent Azure Front Door configuration change caused DNS and routing problems, producing timeouts, errors and degraded service across regions.
- Mitigations included blocking further AFD changes, failing the portal away from AFD, rolling back to a last known good configuration, rerouting traffic and deploying a fix, after which initial recovery was reported.
- User reports on Downdetector peaked at over 18,000 for Azure and nearly 11,700 for Microsoft 365 before trending down as services began to recover.
- Operational impacts were reported by Alaska Airlines, Vodafone and Heathrow, with the Scottish Parliament suspending voting, and the incident renewed focus on cloud concentration risk following last week’s major AWS outage.
