Azhar Mahmood Named Pakistan’s Acting Test Coach

The board has given Mahmood an interim mandate to ready Pakistan’s bottom-ranked red-ball side for its World Test Championship series against South Africa.

Overview

  • Mahmood takes over from Aaqib Javed and will remain in charge until the conclusion of his existing PCB contract.
  • He inherits a Test team that finished last in the 2023–25 World Test Championship and has missed out on three consecutive WTC finals.
  • Since 2021, Pakistan has cycled through seven Test coaches, underscoring persistent leadership instability and governance disputes within the PCB.
