Ayuso Sets Late-November Reopening for Madrid’s Line 7B as Line 6 Shutdown Strains Commutes

Officials set a late-November return for Line 7B following years of costly stabilization after 73 homes were demolished.

Overview

  • Fifteen stations on Line 6 between Legazpi and Moncloa have been closed since September 6 for modernization works scheduled through December 31, triggering long queues and heavy crowding.
  • Free replacement buses and added trains on Lines 1, 2 and 3 have not absorbed displaced demand, with union representatives calling the bus capacity insufficient compared with metro trains.
  • Isabel Díaz Ayuso said Line 7B will reopen fully in late November “with all guarantees,” following extensive remediation in San Fernando de Henares and Coslada.
  • The 7B repairs included injecting more than 13,000 tonnes of mortar into the subsurface, over €120 million in spending, demolition of 73 homes and continued monitoring of about 260 more, according to official reports.
  • Ayuso reiterated plans for a new urban park in the most affected zone, as national and regional leaders trade criticisms over the disruption and service outages reported elsewhere in the network.
