Overview
- Three MLAs — Rakesh Pratap Singh (Gauriganj), Abhay Singh (Gosainganj) and Vinod Chaturvedi (Kalpi) — formally joined the BJP on Wednesday at a membership event in Amethi.
- Uttar Pradesh BJP leaders Pankaj Chaudhary and Smriti Irani led the induction and presented the defections as a boost to the party’s local strength while the new entrants claimed substantial grassroots backing.
- The move raises pressure on the Samajwadi Party after it has already named Tej Narain 'Pawan' Pandey as its Ayodhya candidate and follows recent public sparring between CM Yogi Adityanath and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav over who should contest from Ayodhya.
- Within the BJP there is active lobbying for the Ayodhya Sadar ticket with Ved Prakash Gupta likely to be replaced and contenders including Abhay Singh and the camp of Indra Pratap Tiwari seeking the party nomination.
- The defections highlight SP organisational strains but the wider electoral effect will depend on whether the defectors can transfer booth-level workers and voters to the BJP, while Asaduddin Owaisi’s rallies add a new variable to Muslim voter calculations.
