Overview
- The regional emergency center (COER) reported on Oct. 14–15 that five wildfires remain active in Vista Alegre, Soras, Colcabamba and two sites in Vilcashuamán.
- Since June 23 the region has recorded roughly 115–120 fires that have burned about 3,000 hectares of natural cover and damaged cropland and homes.
- Authorities say most fires are started by people using fire to clear land, renew pastures or follow traditional practices, and they link October to the largest monthly surge.
- Dry vegetation, lack of rain, strong winds and remote, hard‑to‑reach terrain have slowed response, with teams taking two to three hours to reach some outbreaks.
- Officials and analysts are pushing for stronger local prevention, community brigades, clearer evacuation routes and a review of national resources meant to support firefighting, including aircraft equipment.
