Axel Springer Names Helge Fuhst to Lead Premium Group, Head Welt

The appointment consolidates editorial control across Welt, Politico Deutschland, Business Insider Deutschland before Germany's 2026 election year.

Overview

  • Fuhst will become chair of the Premium-Group's editors and editor-in-chief of the Welt-Group effective at the earliest possible date.
  • Welt chief Jan Philipp Burgard resigned with immediate effect for health reasons after reporting a serious in-flight medical incident and subsequent advice to take time off following checks at the Charité.
  • Gordon Repinski at Politico Deutschland and Moritz Seyffarth at Business Insider Deutschland remain in their posts and will report to Fuhst, while Ulf Poschardt stays on as publisher.
  • CEO Mathias Döpfner praised Fuhst as an accomplished journalist and manager and framed the change as reinforcing the group's strategy for the 2026 Superwahljahr.
  • Fuhst led Tagesthemen as ARD-aktuell deputy editor-in-chief and previously held roles at Phoenix and WDR, and his switch follows other public-broadcaster departures to Springer such as Constantin Schreiber.
