Overview
- The Metropolitan Police charged Axel Rudakubana on 28 July with two counts of assault on an emergency worker, attempted grievous bodily harm and unauthorised possession of an offensive weapon, all linked to incidents at HMP Belmarsh in 2025.
- He is due to appear via videolink from Broadmoor at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 11 September to answer the new allegations.
- Reports say one May 2025 incident involved boiling water being poured over a prison officer and that the other alleged assaults occurred on 8 May, 26 June and 28 October 2025.
- The Ministry of Justice says the clinical transfer to Broadmoor was made under the Mental Health Act and does not alter the life sentence with a 52‑year minimum he received for the July 2024 Southport killings.
- Families and their lawyer say the transfer risks retraumatisation and have criticised the lack of detail about the decision, a complaint that follows a public inquiry earlier this year which found the original attack could and should have been prevented.
