Overview
- DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based team that builds DuckDB, is joining Amazon Web Services and will remain in place to continue development of DuckDB, DuckLake, Quack and related projects.
- The core projects will stay MIT-licensed and the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation will continue stewardship of the codebase to preserve open-source access.
- DuckLabs and AWS pointed to prior collaboration on DuckDB support for Amazon S3 Tables and Amazon SageMaker Lakehouse as technical groundwork for deeper integration across AWS data products.
- The team says the move gives it AWS infrastructure, engineering resources and customer reach so it no longer must rely mainly on converting free users into paid support contracts.
- DuckLabs plans governance changes that include expanding the Foundation’s role, creating a commercial advisory board, and opening the extension ecosystem to run extensions signed by other developers and organizations.
