Avian Flu Confirmed in Gulls on Spain’s North Coast as Galicia Logs First 2025 Cases

Authorities emphasize very low public risk with targeted precautions for municipal crews.

Overview

  • Galicia reported five highly pathogenic avian influenza positives in wild gulls, confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Algete.
  • Four yellow‑legged gulls and one lesser black‑backed gull were found in Arteixo, Abegondo, Miño, Foz and Bueu, marking Galicia’s first confirmed cases this year.
  • The affected birds were sampled for analysis and their carcasses were removed and disposed of under regulatory protocols after handling in wildlife recovery centers.
  • The Basque Department of Health said recent gull cases have been identified mainly along the Bizkaia coast and assessed the risk to the general population as very low.
  • No new population‑level restrictions have been imposed, with authorities urging coastal municipalities to step up cleaning, disinfection and worker PPE and to report dead or ill birds to provincial collection services.
