Avengers: Twilight Depicts Dystopian Future, Aging Heroes Fight Back

Steve Rogers, once Captain America, is recruited by an underground resistance to challenge the oppressive regime led by James Stark, son of Tony Stark and Janet Van Dyne.

  • Avengers: Twilight, a new comic series, presents a dystopian future where superheroes have been outlawed and discredited following a catastrophic event known as 'H-Day', orchestrated by Ultron, which resulted in the deaths of many heroes and civilians.
  • An aged and depowered Steve Rogers, formerly known as Captain America, is living in a society controlled by authoritarian forces and corporate interests, including James Stark, the son of Tony Stark and Janet Van Dyne, who has leveraged his corporate assets to engineer the brutal conditions of the country.
  • Rogers is eventually recruited by an underground resistance led by an aged Luke Cage, who offers him a recreated Super Soldier Serum to restore his abilities and lead the resistance against the oppressive regime.
  • The series draws parallels to The Dark Knight Returns, with Rogers coming out of retirement to reclaim his role as a hero, and sets up a potential conflict between Rogers and James Stark, who is presented as a new, villainous Iron Man.
  • Despite some criticism for its pacing and visual storytelling, the series is noted for its strong political message warning against the rise of fascism and the erosion of civil liberties.
