'Avatar' VFX Artists Unionize with IATSE in Landmark Vote

The move marks a significant step in the efforts to unionize visual effects artists, with the majority of eligible workers at a Walt Disney Studios subsidiary voting in favor.

  • Visual effects artists working on the 'Avatar' films have voted to unionize with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), marking a significant step in the efforts to unionize visual effects artists.
  • The vote was carried out among 88 eligible workers at Walt Disney Studios subsidiary TCF US Productions 27, Inc., with 57 voting in favor of unionization and 19 against.
  • The unionization does not include employees of VFX facility vendors, notably Weta FX, which employs the majority of the artists working on the 'Avatar' films.
  • The workers aim to gain comparable benefits and pay to their unionized peers and have greater input into working conditions.
  • This is the fourth VFX group to vote to unionize in the past six months, following in-house VFX artists at Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios, and artists at the Vancouver offices of VFX company DNEG.
