Avanti to Divert West Coast Trains Via Settle–Carlisle for Two Weeks in January 2026

The £60 million Clifton Bridge replacement will close the Preston–Carlisle stretch, prompting a shuttle that keeps passengers on trains.

Overview

  • From January 1–14, 2026, services between Preston and Carlisle will run non-stop via the Settle–Carlisle line roughly every two hours.
  • Avanti will deploy bi-mode Class 805 Evero trains to cover the unelectrified route, following a successful 10-car trial in August.
  • The M6 will be closed between junctions 39 and 40 on the first two weekends of January as the bridge works proceed.
  • Travelers heading to Scotland from London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester will be advised to use the East Coast Main Line, with buses for Lancaster, Oxenholme and Penrith.
  • Full timetables and passenger guidance are due in early October, with some diverted services reaching the Settle–Carlisle via Blackburn, Clitheroe and Hellifield.
