Overview

  • The avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) campsite near Mana village in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district early Friday morning, burying 55 workers in snow-covered containers.
  • Rescue teams, including over 200 personnel and six helicopters, have saved 51 workers so far, with four confirmed dead and four still missing.
  • Treacherous conditions, including heavy snowfall, near-zero visibility, and freezing temperatures, have hampered rescue operations at the remote site, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters.
  • Ground-penetrating radar, sniffer dogs, and intensive patrolling are being used to locate three containers still buried under 6-7 feet of snow.
  • Evacuated workers are receiving treatment at army hospitals, with critical cases prioritized, while local medical facilities have been placed on high alert.
