Overview
- The Colorado Avalanche signed head coach Jared Bednar to a four-year extension through the 2030–31 season on Wednesday, with the announcement coming hours before the team’s season opener against the Los Angeles Kings.
- Bednar is the winningest coach in franchise history with a 445–262–75 regular-season record and roughly a 60‑win postseason record, and he is the first coach to win championships at the ECHL, AHL and NHL levels.
- Team president of hockey operations and general manager Joe Sakic said Bednar “commands the room” and has the players’ confidence, and Bednar said he is extremely happy and grateful to continue leading the group.
- The extension follows a 2025–26 campaign in which Colorado set a franchise record with 121 points, won the Presidents’ Trophy and reached the Western Conference Final, and comes after other offseason moves meant to keep the core intact.
- By locking Bednar in for the next four seasons the Avalanche aim to preserve coaching continuity, raise expectations for another Stanley Cup, and give the front office clearer footing for short- and medium-term roster planning.
