AVA-Asaja Reports 122 Sheep Suffocated in Valencia After Panic Attributed to Wild Animals

The farm group urges tighter wildlife controls to protect herds.

Overview

  • The incident occurred over the Christmas period at a farm in Aras de los Olmos, where 122 of 480 sheep were found dead after piling up in panic.
  • Farmer Antonio Miguel Álvaro and AVA-Asaja attribute the panic to the presence of wild animals near walls and fences, possibly wolves or wild dogs.
  • According to the farmer, the animals did not enter the enclosure but their proximity terrified the flock, causing a crush that led to suffocation.
  • About half a dozen sheep were left injured and may not survive, based on the farmer’s account shared by the agrarian association.
  • Citing recurring incidents in the area, AVA-Asaja called on authorities to intensify population control of wild fauna and warned of disease risks such as African swine fever and avian influenza.
