Autumn Storms Raise Road Risks for Drivers

Safety bodies urge checks of lights, batteries, tyres to prevent accidents caused by early darkness, fog and leaf-slick roads.

Overview

  • The first real autumn storm has arrived and safety groups warn that earlier dusk, strong side winds, fog and wet leaves are combining to raise crash risk on bridges, forest clearings and rural roads.
  • TÜV NORD and DEKRA recommend simple vehicle checks including battery condition, wiper function, washer fluid with antifreeze and properly aligned lighting because cold and moisture reduce battery output and faulty lights cut visibility.
  • Winter tyres are required in wintery conditions in Germany and experts say M+S markings no longer suffice with a recommended minimum tread depth of about 4 mm to keep braking distances manageable on slippery surfaces.
  • Drivers should manually switch on low beam in fog or heavy rain since automatic or daytime running lights may not activate rear lights, keep speed and distance down for side winds and wet leaves, and use full braking rather than swerving for animals when a collision is imminent.
  • TÜV NORD is offering free light checks throughout October to help motorists confirm headlight function and alignment, and motorists are urged to carry emergency items such as blankets, water, food, an ice scraper and frost protection for long delays.
