Overview
- The first autumn storm that hit on Oct. 23 highlighted dangers from strong side winds and falling branches that can cause loss of control and vehicle damage.
- TÜV NORD is offering free light checks through October and experts warn drivers to inspect head- and taillights because automatic systems and daytime running lights may not give full visibility in fog or heavy rain.
- Drivers should check batteries, wipers and washer fluid with antifreeze now because cold cuts battery capacity and poor wipers or empty fluid tanks increase the chance of breakdowns and blocked windshields.
- Fit winter tyres as soon as frost or glaze appears; German rules require winter tyres in icy conditions, experts recommend at least 4 mm tread and note M+S markings are no longer sufficient.
- Adjust driving for autumn hazards by slowing for wet leaves, keeping both hands on the wheel in side winds, braking in a controlled way for wildlife, and avoiding parking under trees during storms to reduce injuries and repair costs.
