Autumn School Holidays Trigger Friday Traffic Crunch Across Germany and the Southern Netherlands

Police checks plus roadworks are expected to compound delays at key border routes.

Overview

  • School holidays have begun in several German states, including NRW, and follow in the southern Netherlands, concentrating departures on Friday, 10 October.
  • ADAC advises drivers not to leave right after school on Friday, warning of peak congestion from 14:00 to 18:00 and recommending early morning or late evening departures.
  • ANWB forecasts long jams from about 16:30 on the Dutch A2, A27 and A50, with heavy traffic likely at the A1 crossing at De Lutte and the A12 near Oud‑Dijk.
  • Bundespolizei urges travelers to have valid ID ready, reports recent average delays of 10–15 minutes at checkpoints, and will conduct fixed, mobile and on‑train spot checks.
  • Traffic capacity will be reduced by extensive works, with about 1,200 construction sites nationwide (over 800 in NRW) and Dutch closures on the A9 (10–13 Oct), A17 (10–20 Oct) and A73 at Ewijk (to 13 Oct).
