Autumn Lawn Care: Cut Watering, Manage Leaves, Strengthen Turf for Winter

New guidance details soil‑specific watering rates to prepare grass for dormancy before the first frost.

Overview

  • On sandy soil, water about twice weekly at roughly 7 liters per square meter in October, while clay soils typically need only one weekly watering, with irrigation stopping once the first frost arrives.
  • Remove thick leaf layers from turf to prevent light deprivation and snow mold, clearing or raking weekly to avoid moss, rot spots and fungal diseases.
  • Use mulch‑mowing as a compromise by finely shredding a light scattering of leaves with the grass cuttings so the material disappears between blades without forming a mat.
  • Keep the final lawn height around 4–5 centimeters and time the last cut to when growth slows with cooler nights rather than a fixed calendar date.
  • Apply an autumn fertilizer high in potassium to boost winter hardiness and avoid nitrogen, which drives soft growth that is unsuitable late in the season.
