Auto-Theft Suspect Identified After La Presa Police Shooting as Body-Cam Video Released

The sheriff's office is leading the investigation under a regional agreement to avoid conflicts.

Overview

  • Edwaun Walter Thames, 39, was named as the man shot after a chase from Lincoln Park to La Presa.
  • Officials say body-camera video shows Thames lean toward an object that appeared to be a firearm moments before SDPD Officer Henry Ingram Jr. fired two shots.
  • Thames was released from medical care and booked on suspicion of auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evasion, with bail set at $50,000.
  • The pursuit began after a stolen-vehicle report near Euclid and Imperial, included spike strips, and ended in a crash at Jamacha Road and Gillespie Drive that toppled a light pole onto a patrol car, injuring an officer.
  • Investigators identified Ingram as having about two years with SDPD, and the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney after the sheriff’s probe is complete.
