Authorities Urge Fireworks Avoidance Ahead of Fiestas Patrias

Officials cite child burn data to underscore legal and safety risks.

Overview

  • Mexico City’s SSC and national agencies warn that misuse of pyrotechnics can cause severe burns, amputations, fires and death, and advise avoiding their use during Independence celebrations.
  • Health authorities report an estimated 42,000 child burn cases each year out of 128,000 total, with up to half of pyrotechnic injuries in those under 15 and holiday accidents increasing by as much as 35%.
  • The use, sale, possession and storage of explosives are regulated by the Ley Federal de Armas de Fuego y Explosivos, and violations can carry administrative sanctions or prison time.
  • Prevention guidance includes keeping minors from handling fireworks, close adult supervision, avoiding storage or keeping items cool and dry if on hand, staying at least 15 meters away, not reigniting duds and avoiding synthetic clothing.
  • In case of an accident, call 911, use stop‑drop‑roll and do not remove fabric stuck to burns, with severe cases treated in IMSS emergency units, and authorities also urge protecting pets by keeping them sheltered and identifiable.
