Authorities to Honor Laura Dahlmeier’s Wish to Leave Body on Laila Peak

Recovery efforts are paused because dangerous monsoon conditions persist, pending official review of her written directive.

  • Laura Dahlmeier was struck and killed by a sudden rockfall at about 5,700 metres on Laila Peak on July 28 while descending with climbing partner Marina Eva Krauss.
  • A helicopter dispatched on July 29 was grounded by heavy rain and unstable slopes, and crews located her body on July 30 before suspending recovery over safety concerns.
  • In a statement on her Instagram account, Dahlmeier said she did not want anyone to risk their lives to recover her remains if she died on a mountain.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed officials are reviewing her written directive and have made no attempt to recover her body under the current hazardous conditions.
