Overview

  • Between June 12 and 13, the Louisa County Sheriff's Office, Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Columbus Junction Police executed search warrants at two camp sites and took 88 children into protective custody.
  • Officials launched the operation after a 15-year-old camp attendee from Texas called authorities and separate reports cited child abuse and endangerment at the Shekinah Glory Camp.
  • The children were brought to Wapello Methodist Church to meet with child protection workers before being placed with parents, guardians or in temporary foster care.
  • As of June 18, no arrests have been made and the investigation into the Kingdom Ministry of Rehabilitation and Recreation remains active.
  • Camp leaders, including Victor Bawi, have denied any wrongdoing and assert that none of the children were harmed during their stay.
