Authorities Probe Coordinated Drone Surveys of Critical Sites in Northern Germany

The sightings have triggered espionage probes alongside a push to widen Germany's counter-drone powers.

Overview

  • An internal memo cited by Der Spiegel describes a 'mother-drone' formation flying parallel tracks to map facilities including a power plant, the University Hospital Kiel, the state government seat and stretches of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal.
  • Observers also reported a large stationary drone and several small craft over the Kiel Fjord, following initial sightings above Thyssenkrupp/TKMS facilities.
  • Similar activity was reported over a Bundeswehr site in Sanitz and the Navy command and port areas in Rostock, where the Federal Police later tracked heavier quadcopters flying in a coordinated pattern.
  • Schleswig-Holstein’s interior minister said authorities are investigating on suspicion of espionage and will brief the state parliament’s interior committee today.
  • Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced a national drone-defense center and proposed allowing the Bundeswehr to neutralize unauthorized drones beyond military bases, while the operators of the flights remain unknown.
