Overview

  • The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office named the deceased as 20-year-old Matteo Ramirez-Santos of Santa Rosa, saying he had outstanding warrants for weapons and robbery charges and was documented as a gang member.
  • Police say he assaulted his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend at her parents' home, pistol-whipped her, and threatened to kill her and any responding officers.
  • During more than six hours barricaded inside, investigators say he issued threats by text, phone calls, and social media, including a post suggesting he would take an officer with him.
  • After SWAT deployed chemical agents around 4:53 a.m., investigators say he appeared to fire from the doorway and then charged out holding a gun, and SWAT Officer Sean Keaney fired one shot from an armored vehicle turret.
  • Ramirez-Santos was pronounced dead at 4:57 a.m., no officers or neighbors were injured, and Keaney is on paid leave while the sheriff's office leads a criminal investigation alongside an SRPD administrative review of body-camera, surveillance, and witness evidence.
