Austria’s Winter-Tyre Rule Now In Force, With Fines Up to €10,000 for Non-Compliance

Tourists and transit drivers are equally subject to Austria’s winter equipment requirements during wintry road conditions.

Overview

  • The seasonal regulation for 2025/26 applies from 1 November 2025 to 15 April 2026 on a situational basis when roads are icy, snowy or slushy.
  • Tyres are considered winter-capable with M+S/M&S markings, with minimum tread depths of 4 mm for radial and 5 mm for diagonal tyres as specified in Austria.
  • Police can issue typical fines around €100, rising to as much as €10,000 in severe cases that endanger others, and insurers may seek recourse after crashes on summer tyres.
  • High-quality all-season tyres gained traction in 2024 sales and can suffice for urban and low-altitude driving, though ADAC still recommends dedicated winter tyres for snow-prone regions.
  • Experts advise replacing tyres at about seven years of age, checking tread from 4 mm, avoiding poor-quality no-name products, and considering workshop fitting for vehicles with direct TPMS.
