Austrian Nuns Defy Diocese, Remain at Goldenstein Convent With Supporters' Help

The octogenarian sisters say lifelong residence rights were ignored after their community was dissolved.

Overview

  • Sisters Bernadette, 88, Regina, 86, and Rita, 81–82, left a Catholic care home on September 4 and reoccupied their rooms at Schloss Goldenstein near Salzburg.
  • Former students and a locksmith helped them regain access, restore basic power and water, and organize supplies, with a local doctor monitoring their health.
  • Reichersberg Abbey’s provost, Markus Grasl, called the move “completely incomprehensible,” saying the building is unfit for orderly care and warning of possible medical emergencies.
  • The sisters are documenting daily life on Instagram, drawing more than 10,000 followers and showing partial utility restoration and the removal of a stairlift.
  • No formal eviction has been reported, the abbey says a return to the nursing home is “unavoidable,” and the on-site school continues to operate.
