Austrian Climber, 27, Dies in 80-Meter Fall During Guided Watzmann Ridge Crossing

Police currently assign no fault to the guide under prosecutorial oversight.

Overview

  • The fall occurred Tuesday at about 8:30 a.m. shortly after the Watzmann-Mittelspitze on the massif’s east side.
  • The four-person group had departed the Watzmannhaus with a mountain guide when the man slipped on an easy, unsecured section and plunged roughly 80 meters into a gully.
  • Rescue helicopter CH 14 flew a Bergwacht rescuer and an emergency doctor to the site, where the doctor could only confirm the death.
  • Additional rescuers evacuated the three companions from the ridge, and a Bergwacht crisis-intervention team supported them in the valley.
  • Police mountain guides from Grenzpolizei Piding are investigating under the Traunstein prosecutor’s office, which says the guide is not currently being blamed.
