Austria and Italy Raise Motorway Tolls as 2026 Begins

Existing CPI indexation in Austria plus court‑upheld concession clauses in Italy underpin the price moves.

Overview

  • Austria’s ASFINAG implemented new route tolls on 1 January for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, with the A13 Brenner now €12.50, the A10 Tauern/Katschberg €15, and the A9 Gleinalm €12, while the Bosruck Tunnel remains €7 and multi‑ride tickets increased.
  • The Austrian adjustments apply to cars, motorhomes and small transporters that pay stretch tolls in addition to the vignette.
  • ASFINAG says the increases follow harmonised CPI indexation at roughly 4% at end‑2025 to support operations, maintenance and safety upgrades such as tunnel systems and monitoring.
  • Italy enacted an interministerial decree from the Finance and Transport ministries setting an average motorway toll rise of about 1.5% from 1 January, aligned with expected 2026 inflation and existing concession contracts.
  • Italy’s Constitutional Court blocked a transport‑ministry freeze attempt led by Matteo Salvini, leaving most Autostrade per l’Italia sections subject to the rise, with exemptions such as Autostrada Alto Adriatico and Strada dei Parchi and a 1.923% increase on Salerno–Pompei–Neapel, so travelers should budget for higher costs on long routes.
