Australian Retail Sales Surge 1.2% in June on Mid-Year Discounts and Switch 2 Launch

Discretionary purchases of furniture, electronics and gaming fuel the series’ strongest monthly rise since March 2022 as it nears its replacement with a broader household spending measure.

Overview

  • Household goods turnover jumped 2.3% and department store sales climbed 1.9%, while gaming retailers reported record Nintendo Switch 2 sales.
  • Spending at cafes, restaurants and takeaway services fell by 0.4% amid the overall retail uptick.
  • Second-quarter retail sales volumes edged up 0.3%, but per capita volumes slipped 0.1% and remain 6.0% below their June 2022 peak.
  • Consumers flocked to end-of-financial-year promotions to secure value on big-ticket items such as furniture, electronics and clothing.
  • This marks the final retail sales release before the ABS rolls out a monthly household spending indicator covering about 68% of consumption.
