Australian Police Escalate Search for Missing German Backpacker in Western Australia

Authorities have deployed the Criminal Investigation Branch with helicopter patrols to scour remote Wheatbelt areas following the disappearance of 26-year-old German backpacker Carolina Wilga more than a week ago.

  • On July 9, Western Australia Police expanded the operation by bringing in the Criminal Investigation Branch and launching helicopter patrols over sparsely populated Wheatbelt bushland.
  • Carolina Wilga was last seen on June 28 in a Toodyay supermarket and was travelling in a black-silver 1995 Mitsubishi van bearing licence plate 1HDS330.
  • Her family last spoke with her on June 18 and reported her missing on June 29 after she failed to make further contact with friends.
  • Investigators say there is no evidence of foul play so far and continue to appeal to the public for any sightings of Wilga or her vehicle.
  • Wilga has spent two years backpacking across Australia, funding her journey through mine work and frequently travelling through areas with limited cell coverage.
