Donna Nelson, a 58-year-old Perth grandmother, is on trial in Japan after being arrested in January 2023 with two kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in her suitcase.
Nelson alleges she was tricked by an online lover named 'Kelly,' a man she communicated with for three years but never met in person.
Kelly, claiming to be a fashion designer in Japan, asked Nelson to pick up a suitcase during a layover in Laos, saying it was a sample for his business.
Nelson testified she did not suspect a scam as Kelly never asked for money and paid for her flights, though she had to cover hotel costs in Laos herself.
She expressed deep remorse for unwittingly participating in drug trafficking, stating she feels guilt for the impact on her family and community.
