Australia to Enforce Stricter Road Laws and AI Monitoring From July 1

This overhaul responds to record road deaths with AI surveillance, tougher fines, reduced speed zones

Overview

  • AI-powered cameras nationwide will detect mobile phone use and seatbelt breaches, with offenders facing fines up to $1209 and up to five demerit points.
  • New South Wales will boost seatbelt penalties, use phone detection cameras to enforce seatbelt laws and eliminate ticketless parking fines.
  • Victoria will impose a 40 km/h limit when passing stationary or slow-moving emergency and tow vehicles, while South Australia will enforce a 25 km/h limit near roadside recovery vehicles.
  • Queensland will lift car registration fees and traffic fines by 3.4 percent and reduce speed limits to 40 km/h in key tourist areas.
  • Western Australia will lower speed limits on sealed rural roads west of the Bussell Highway from 80–100 km/h to 70 km/h, cut urban limits to 60 km/h and set a 40 km/h zone in Augusta.
