Australia Selects Japan’s Mogami-Class Frigates in A$10 Billion SEA 3000 Deal

Following down-selection, the first three frigates will be built in Japan, with the remainder constructed at Henderson shipyards in Western Australia.

Overview

  • Australia’s National Security Committee formally chose Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ upgraded Mogami-class design over Germany’s MEKO A-200 for the SEA 3000 programme.
  • The A$10 billion contract covers 11 general-purpose frigates that will replace the Anzac-class fleet and bolster naval deterrence.
  • Contract negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of 2025, laying the groundwork for sustained industrial collaboration and full intellectual property transfer.
  • The enhanced Mogami design features a 32-cell Mk 41 vertical launch system, a 10,000-nautical-mile range and a reduced crew requirement of around 90 sailors.
  • Initial delivery of the first vessel is slated for late 2029 to bridge capability gaps ahead of Hunter-class frigate arrivals.
