Overview
- The Fair Work Commission approved an interim industry order that guarantees delivery workers at least A$31.30 an hour for engaged time with higher rates for motorbikes (A$31.80) and cars (A$32.00).
- Platforms must calculate earnings over up to 21 days and pay a top-up if a worker’s total pay in that period falls below the earnings floor.
- The order requires platforms to provide and pay for personal accident insurance covering on-the-job injuries while workers remain responsible for third-party vehicle insurance.
- The measure was jointly proposed by the Transport Workers’ Union, Uber Eats and DoorDash and takes effect on Monday, August 17, covering about 250,000 delivery workers.
- The move builds on 2023–24 Australian law that empowered the Fair Work Commission, follows recent ILO standards, and may prompt platforms to decide whether to absorb higher costs or pass them to customers.
