Overview
- The ACCC issued an urgent recall for Kadink Sand (1.3kg), Educational Colours Rainbow Sand (1.3kg) and Creatistics Coloured Sand (1kg) after tremolite asbestos was detected in some samples during laboratory testing.
- The products were sold nationwide between 2020 and 2025 at retailers including Officeworks, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids and Zart Art, with New Zealand outlets such as Paper Plus and other suppliers also affected.
- Consumers are told to stop using the sand, seal it in a heavy‑duty plastic bag, double‑tape it, keep it out of children’s reach, and use disposable gloves and a mask when handling.
- MBIE says testing in New Zealand is ongoing and it is coordinating advice with Health New Zealand, WorkSafe and the Ministry of Education, with disposal to be arranged through Class A licensed asbestos removalists and refunds available from suppliers.
- Officeworks removed the products from sale, citing an independent assessment that found negligible safety risk, but it is proceeding with a precautionary withdrawal and voluntary recall while suppliers support customers.
