Australia Issues Measles Exposure Alerts for International Travellers

Health officials are urging Australians to verify measles vaccination after recent exposure warnings

A new health alert has been issued after a confirmed case of measles has been identified in Sydney’s inner south.

Overview

  • NSW Health confirmed an infectious traveller from South-East Asia passed through Sydney International Airport on June 15–16, triggering alerts for passengers on Vietnam Airlines flight VN773 and arrivals hall visitors
  • WA Health issued a parallel warning after a returned traveller in Perth tested positive, expanding the list of potential exposure sites to include Perth Airport
  • Authorities report 80 confirmed measles cases in Australia since January 1 compared with 57 for all of 2024, mirroring outbreaks in South-East Asia and Afghanistan
  • Officials advise monitoring for fever, sore eyes, runny nose, cough and rash for up to 18 days after exposure and recommend watching for symptoms until July 4, 2025
  • The MMR vaccine is free for children at 12 and 18 months and is recommended for everyone born after 1965 with post-exposure doses effective if given promptly
