Overview

  • More than 40 of the 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks pledged by Canberra have reached the Ukrainian military after the first tranche arrived in mid-July.
  • The nine-month delay was driven by the requirement for U.S. congressional approval of the American-made vehicles and complex logistical hurdles.
  • The A$245 million Abrams package forms part of Australia’s broader A$1.5 billion military and humanitarian support for Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian technicians have begun installing steel cages on the tanks to protect them from Russian drone attacks.
  • A Royal Australian Air Force E-7A Wedgetail surveillance plane will deploy to Europe in August to safeguard vital supply routes for the remaining deliveries.
