Australia Declines 2035 Renewables Target, Sticks to 62–70% Emissions Cut

Ministers describe the projected >90% renewable grid pathway from official modelling as analysis rather than policy.

Overview

  • Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the government has not set a 2035 renewables share goal, stating, “We haven’t set a particular target.”
  • The Climate Change Authority and Treasury pathway points to more than 90% renewables by 2035 with major increases in wind and rooftop solar, which Bowen called a possibility rather than policy.
  • The government is holding to its 82% renewables-by-2030 objective, with Bowen saying it is achievable but remains an ongoing challenge.
  • Environment Minister Murray Watt said the government has approved its 100th renewables project and urged a rapid rollout as approvals reform continues.
  • The target is being presented at a UN summit in New York as environmental groups and parts of business voice concerns and Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce attacks the plan’s economic impact; Australia continues talks with Türkiye over climate summit hosting rights.
