Australia, Canada Warships Transit Taiwan Strait as China Condemns Passage

Western navies treat the strait as international waters, a position Beijing rejects.

Overview

  • On Sept. 6, the Canadian frigate Quebec and Australian destroyer Brisbane sailed through the Taiwan Strait, the PLA said.
  • The PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command reported deploying naval and air units to monitor the entire passage and labeled the transit “causing trouble” that heightens security risks.
  • Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory and asserts jurisdiction over the strait, which it says falls under its control.
  • China has not ruled out using force to take the island and has increased fighter jet and naval deployments around Taiwan in recent years.
  • The United States frequently conducts such passages, and several allies have increased their presence, making these transits a recurring point of friction.
